How To Rescue an ACC Dog

So, you want to save a shelter dog’s life and need some advice?

Why buy from a breeder when you can adopt a wonderful pet in need of a loving home! All of these shelter dogs will come neutered/spayed, vaccinated, and with a personality evaluation. Many are already housetrained, and some are obedience trained.

Dogs from Animal Care & Control NEED YOUR HELP – they are sadly being put to sleep at a rate that rescuers cannot keep up with. Healthy young dogs are euthanized simply because of a lack of shelter space.

What can you do? Useful tips:

  • 1/2013 UPDATE: You can now adopt a dog online before going to the shelter!!! You need to put down a $50 credit card deposit (there is also a modest adoption fee, don’t forget) & pick up the dog within 48 hours (and of course give it a good home – yours!). “Urgent” dogs are available on the ACC website until 6 am the following day. The same person who puts down the deposit must pick up the dog. IF you don’t get the dog within 48 hours, the dog will be euthanized and the deposit is forfeited. –> CLICK HERE
  • NOTE: If you call to adopt or foster, you must live within a few hours driving distance of NYC (or near the rescue you’re contacting), either have your landlord’s documented permission to have a dog on the premises or own your home, and will adopt the dog yourself, if you plan to adopt. For current ACC shelter dogs, have their ID # available when contacting anyone about rescuing that particular dog.
  • Adopt a dog directly from the shelter or any of the lists on, or Urgent Part 2 (Urgent Death Row Dogs) on Facebook
  • If you are a serious adopter, and only if you are able to go to the shelter in-person, please email about adopting a particular dog (have the dog’s shelter ID# ready). New York Animal Care & Control facility locations and directions
  • Adopt a dog which has already been rescued from the shelter by a rescue group and is in foster care— this allows the rescue to rescue more dogs from ACC’s “Urgents” lists. THIS SAVES A LIFE, just as much as pulling from the euthanasia list does! Plus you have the advantage of knowing more about a dog, including how he or she will fit into your home, after the dog has been in foster for a while.
  • Apply to foster a dog! Rescue groups are in desperate need of good foster homes; they cannot pull dogs from shelters if the dogs have nowhere to stay afterwards! Use the contact info in the rescue list below to apply to be a foster. See THIS link for a list of rescue groups looking for more foster homes!
  • NYC ACC has a shelter foster program (you must go to orientation before taking home a dog, and must be over 18 years old).
  • IMPORTANT: NYC ACC adoption information: forms, instructions, fees
  • 7/2012 UPDATE: Due to system updates, you can’t get a live person anymore when you call the shelters. You must call 311 (212-639-9675 if outside of NYC) to inquire about an animal.
